Where once Sicily was only known for sweet, sticky Marsala, today it is a hothouse of winemaking innovation producing some of the biggest and best bargains in all of Italy. And that's saying something! As Hugh Johnson notes in his classic reference 'The World Atlas of Wine', "the advent of Sicilian table wine has been spectacular" The Di Marias have a long history of winemaking but are definitely not hidebound by tradition. Since 2000 they have teamed up with fellow local experts the Biscardo family in order to produce very high quality Sicilian wines. This lovely silky-smooth Merlot is as fine as any from Bordeaux AOC but with the added Mediterranean warmth and charm. Black cherry and plum bouquet. Smooth and very mouthfilling plum flavours and more than a hint of black liquorice, sweet spice and minerals. Match with char-grilled red meats or hearty casseroles.
